FAMILY CHRONICLES

Seven Decades of Dancing
Dance Studio Steinlein, established three generations ago by the Steinlein family, is a cultural enrichment for the city of Lauf and its surroundings. It all began in 1939 when musician and dance-music orchestra director Hans Steinlein and his wife Barbara launched the first ballroom-dance classes in a former restaurant in the city of Hersbruck. Hans’s long-term experience as professional musician and director of three orchestras inspired him to extend his passion for music into dance. In fact, he enjoyed dancing so much that he enrolled in classes to become a certified ballroom-dance instructor. His master teacher was the well-known professional ballet and dance trainer Mr. Buerger in the town of Ansbach and the Dance Studio Mertel in Munich. It was always a main objective for Hans Steinlein to choose the right dance music during his classes, hence he would play the violin, the piano, or the accordion live during dance class.

Dancing Through Life
After a two-year break during World War II, the Dance Studio opened its doors again with the permission of the American military in 1945. The opening was a major success. In the 1950s everybody enjoyed Jitterbug, Samba, Mambo, Rock ‘n’ Roll, and Cha-Cha-Cha. Until 1962 Hans Steinlein rented out several locations in and around Hersbruck, such as the restaurant “Roter Ochse,” the “Michelsberg,” the “Wildskeller,” and the hotel “Post.” For dance students of the northern region, Hans Steinlein rented the café “Kraft” where he conducted classes for 25 years. The Steinleins then decided to buy their own facility.

1963: A Dream Come True
The property of Mr. Andreas Raum was for sale. The Steinleins bought and renovated the building and converted it into a dance studio. On weekends, classes were offered at the social dance café. After Hans Steinlein passed away, his son Helmut and daughter-in-law Erika took over the Dance Studio. As certified dance instructors they opened a second studio in 1980. In 1988, their daughter Sylvia backed up the team as a certified dance instructor and competitive-dance trainer. Five years later, upon her graduation from the World Masters Dance Academy Rudolf Trautz in Augsburg, Iris Steinlein, the couple’s second daughter, became the newest member of the team.
